All originals I have seen did not have the insert, and as mentioned, they do not seem to have provison for one. When we had the parts business, the reproductions had it. Dick asked the vendor why it was there and the answer was that the one he had been given to copy had it.

When we were working on the present 1968-69 JG, someone sent a photo of a knob with the insert and its GM box showing the part number. That is when we deduced (or should I say "assumed"?) that service ones had it. Joe may have supplied the reason if it was used across other GM lines.

I have never seen one with the set screw.

Here's the deal. Since this knob was also used on Chevy trucks, and Chevrolet likes to have ALL the knobs on the dash match, I did a ebay search on a few of the trucks that used this knob and guess what... The knobs on the dash have the stainless insert!

Here's a pretty good example or an original 1970 Blazer dash (see attached). Note that all of the knobs (including the radio) have the insert.

And HERE'S a great example of an unrestored 1972 Blazer! Note the dash knobs with the inserts and also note the radio knobs without!!

Here is a photo of a '69 override switch (I think- round switch can, headlamp/wiper pulls left and right) with all black knob. Hope this helps.

My 1968's original wiper knob was "lost" early. I noticed it was missing about 1973 and went to a Chevy parts counter and bought a new knob, no extra screw. This new one which is still on the 1968 today has the insert. My 1970 Corvette has always had it's original knob since it was new and it is all black without the insert or a extra screw.
