This cap is from a 1958 Chevrolet (283) made in Dec. 1957 and according to the March 1958 Chevrolet Parts Catalog it is GM # 1552233 in Gr. 1.758 and described as "air breather type FB8". Apparently it does not have any Corvette applications except for maybe a replacement cap for a 1955 Corvette (8cyl.)(GM # 1552193).

John, here is a better photo of the top of the cap showing the indents that weren't apparent in the previous photos. The base of the cap has 3 crimp marks.

Paul, the bottom of the cap lip is smooth. There are no crimp marks on the bottom of the cap, top only.

Here's the problem concerning original oil caps that are sealed up. If the cap is supposed to be zincad then that's a major problem. A problem if you are going to have a professional plater dip the part as if he does he will ruin expensive chemicals. Never forget the time one of my ex cad platers was hollering at me over the phone.
Cheater is to drill a couple of small holes on the bottom of the cap where the rivet is. But since "we" love to look at the rivet to see if it's the real deal then the holes would be caught.
Hardly a week or two goes by when I don't get a call from one of you looking for an original cap. Not available. JD

Does anyone have any idea on when GM switched over in 1959 from the "early" cap with parallel "I" indentations to the "later" cap with D-shaped indentations?
