    '54 Oil Filter Installation

I want to install an oil filter on my '54 Corvette. Perhaps my first question should be, "Is this a valuable modification?" I am not all that concerned about hurting my judging outcome, but am more concerned about enhancing the drivability of my car.

Does anyone have experience doing this, and would be willing to give me some direction? Or, do you know of a Corvette specialist who has done this work who I could contact?

bolt on oil filters were available in the 235 pass cars. can't remember if they were factory/dealer/or aftermarket availability. but i've seen them on old 53-54 pass car 235s i junk yard carcassues years ago. doubt it'd be a major problem adding such a filter. mike

      They discuss it here:

I think the key is post #4 where he gives the part numbers for the Napa filter and bypass mount:
"the NAPA part numbers Spin on Filter PN# 1050 and the mounting base PN# 4755"

Google "spin on oil filter stovebolt six" and you'll get a lot of info. However, it appears that using the above two items - or cross-referencing the oil filter of your preference - will work.

        Re: '54 Oil Filter Installation

I knew and have seen pictures of the filter installation on passenger cars and trucks. These engines don't have triple sidedraft carbs, which would seem to me to get in the way of what I saw. I think what I want would be specific to the '54 Corvette engine, but not sure about that.

A friend has advised me not to worry about this what with lead free gas and better oil, plus changing the oil more often. It just seems to me that an oil filter would be a wise thing. Perhaps I will hear from someone who had done this to their '54 Corvette.

        Thanks for your help,
        Don
