65 L76 with AC Correct Alternator Pulley

I know that there have been multiple posts concerning alternator pulleys for SHP L76 with or without AC but I am still confused. The previous NCRS judging manual edition 5 states that the small block solid lifter engines used a 3 5/8" pulley except for the AC version of L76 which uses a 3 3/8 pulley. The new edition 6 manual has the 65 L76 engine with AC using a 3 " pulley. One of these editions is wrong. Can anyone tell me what my 365hp L76 with AC alternator pulley should be? Thanks. Bill Gould

Bill, w/o looking at the judging manual, the July 1, 1965 parts book appears to see a difference if the car has Transistor Ignition and the 697 alternator - does it have TI?

W/o regard to pouring more fuel on the fire, Gr.2.274 on a page dated l July 1965 has this entry: "PASS, CORVETTE w/Air Cond (exc. 62 amp,
6 cyl w/P/S), #3875968". "exc. 62 amp" =s TI; I have an inquiry in to a friend's Bowtie w/TI on its diameter. The specified pulley diameter for 3875968 is "2 21/32". Price was $3.00.
The AIM indicates some early1965 (late 1964 dates) pulley changes, which include listing of 3875968 - is your car pre-Dec 64?

Friend has checked in with the L79, A/C, TI Bowtie car and reports a pulley of "3 inches" diameter. Looking at the Gr. 2.274 page, that seems to
fit a listing "64-5 CORVETTE (C.A.C. w/Sp H/Per) 327" for #3846180 which is called out as 3 3/64" - I'll give him the 3/64" due to age plus measuring for free.

Loren, my 65 is a mid April car. I'm not sure why the AC 365 motor would have a 3" pulley while the non AC 365 motor would have the larger pulley. I very much appreciate your help.

According to GM, 1965 with L-76 and C-60 used alternator pulley GM #3848023 or 3846180. Both pulleys are 3-3/64" OD according to GM.

I just sold my original 697 alternator and perhaps the current owner will chime in with his measurements of his alternator. I believe the 697 was only offered on cars equipped with S/H/P with A/C and the T.I. ignition option. I was not aware that it was available on non A/C corvettes. ??? opinions please.

Loren and Joe, I am satisfied that the pulley slightly large than 3" is correct. Thanks for you help. Bill Gould

Wow -- the 1110697 was an extremely rare part; the link that David L. provides above shows a post by Page Campbell listing low 700 total units for the '64 and '65 model years. During my 10 years (as a buyer) on eBay, I only saw one part -- an NOS stator # 1964122 (which I won). Both the stator and rotor were unique to that 60 amp alternator. Why? I don't know.

Joe, in my post 5 above my 38461183 SHOULD have been 180 as you state - but in 3 3/4 pages of listing on the l July 1965 part book page, there is no 3848023 pulley listed. Where is this shown according to GM?

Enclosed is a drawing and 2 photos of a NOS 3846180 pulley.

According to Chevrolet Parts history GM # 3848023 was replaced with GM # 3846180 in Oct. 1964 for service pulleys. The two pulleys must be very similar.

You won't find the 3848023 in a July, 1965 P&A Catalog since the 3848023 was discontinued in October, 1964 and replaced by the GM #3846180.
