    1972 LT-1 Engine Suffix Question

The LT-1 I am looking at purchasing has a CKY stamp on the engine pad and a smog pump. I was under the impression that all LT-1's had smog pumps but in looking at "Corvette by the Numbers" I see a CRT suffix that designates an LT-1 w/A.I.R. (RPO# K19). Should this car not have the smog pump? Am I confusing smog pump and A.I.R. or are they one in the same?

    Ron,
My 72 LT-1 has a smog pump and the CKY suffix. I believe, as you do, that all 72 LT-1's had a smog pump.

      Hi Ron,
I believe over years that for at least some people the term 'smog pump' became slang for the entire A.I.R. system that all LT-! engines, (and others), had when they left St.Louis.

If all LT-1's have A.I.R. how do the CKY and CRT engines differ or is there no difference?

I don't believe any CRT engines were ever produced.

            Hi Ron,
The 70-72 TIM&JG indicates that although Chevrolet Service Records list the CRT code engines there are no verified examples of them.

ALL 1970-72 Corvettes with LT-1 were equipped with the air injection reactor system (AIR) system which included a "smog pump". No exceptions. Period.

The engine compartment looks very good, Ron

just a heads up - it appears the air filter is not a correct replacement. The filter should have a wire mesh with about a 1/4" square grid pattern around the entire edge of the filter.

It sounds like you want a car that is nice, but also somewhat original. However, after looking at your picture again in my estimation the following items appear to be not correct: wiper door actuator appears to be painted (s/b gold dichromate), the diverter valve muffler does not have the correct finish, several hoses and tubing are not correct, vehicle emissions sticker is missing as is the tag on the brake fluid reservoir is also missing, the exhaust manifold color does not appear to be correct, but maybe, a specific sticker s/b be on the rear of the right (passenger side) valve cover and also a sticker on the smog diverter valve, and as previously mentioned the screening on the air filter is not correct.

I am sure others can comment on my observations and also offer some of their own.

It is a nice looking car!!!!!!!!!!!
