1966 Head Identification via Oil Cap

Can you see the head part number via the oil cap or is the valve cover required to be removed?

Trying to understand if a car I am looking at has oval or square heads.

I don't believe you will see what you want without removing the valve cover.

1966 - 425 HP with have rectangular ports and the 390 HP has oval ports. Attached is of my L72 head - casting number ending 858, not sure the casting number for the 390 HP

'66 heads will have the machined area and a small tapped thread for holding the spark plug heat shield.
