'69 BB Valve Cover Removal when AIR System Present

    Hi everyone,

I have a '69 L68 with the AIR, air injection system, present which is a first for me. It looks like it would be a lot easier to remove the valve covers, especially the right one, if I disconnect the hoses going from the exhaust to the pump. Anyone know if that's required or recommended? It looks like they would be simple to remove but I've never messed with AIR before. Both hoses connect to a fitting on the pump. Is there a gasket that must be replaced if I remove that fitting? The entire AIR system has been refurbished and is in excellent shape so I'm not dealing with any old, cruddy connections, etc.

    Thanks,

    Jack

It's absolutely best to remove the AIR hoses prior to removal of the valve covers. In fact, you would probably have a very difficult time removing the valve covers if you didn't first remove the hoses. You can disconnect the hoses at either end. They remove quite easily but they may be "stuck" if they have not been removed in a long while.

The hoses connect to the pump end at the diverter valve. If you remove the hoses at the valve, no gasket is involved or needs to be replaced. If you remove the diverter valve, itself, then there is a gasket between it and the pump. That gasket is a "paper" gasket and may very well need to be replaced.
