    Smelly 57

    Hello,

I have a 57 that has been recently finished. The problem is that it smells of gas when I get into it. It is a resto. mod with a LS motor and drive drain. It retains the original gas tank, gas filler, and gas lines. There are no obvious leaks anywhere. Any ideas as to where the odor could be coming from? Is it a 57 issue or experienced by others? It is very strong and so far the origin undetected.
I also have a CI 61 Fuelie restored original with similar gas retention and conveyance system but without the problem.

    Thanks,

    Jack

Jack if you have an original tank determine if it is a vented or non-vented tank. Most likely it is a vented tank so be sure that it has been vented to the fuel fill area and that your are using a non vented gas cap.

Here is a good technical paper that may help you out. I found the source of the gas odor in my '58 to be a cracked rubber filler neck.
