    Re: How do birdcages rust

Here is one of the several problems I had with my 67 coupe, sold new in New York State and driven on their famous heavily salted winter roads early in its life. I don't think this car was driven on salted roads after 1975 because I bought it in 1977, but the damage was done and it can happen that fast. I am doing a body-off restoration and was faced with major frame rot and the #3 body mount was gone on the passenger side. The firewall end of the birdcage was not as bad as the rear. So, when looking at a car, see if you can get a peak inside the body mount inspection cover ahead of the rear wheels too.

The repair pictures show the bad metal around body mount #3. This repair required the removal of major panels and the cutting of fiberglass on my virgin body car...ouch!

Another perfect example of what I've said a million times----once salt-induced corrosion begins, it proceeds inexorably.

What do you think caused this ? 3 guesses and the first 2 don't count!

The third photo appears to indicate this is not a (Split-window)--- '63----- If it is then it has a lot more issues than just the rust spots shown in the first two photos ----- i.e. '65 and later main dash / gauge panel ....
