    1963 Oil filler tube removal

    Hello everyone,

I'm wanting to replace the oil filler tube on my 1963 coupe, 327/300. The one that's there is chrome and should be black for the 300HP. Can anyone give me any tricks for removing the tube from the block and also putting back in the new one?

    Thanks, Kenneth

go to hardware store and buy a shovel handle with an outside diameter near the inside diameter of the tube. insert handle in tube, then slowly exert sideways pressure on the handle. it'll eventually come out. i'm assuming the intake is still on the block, in the chassis. mike

      Hello everyone,

I apologize for not knowing how to use the Technical Forum. When I posted this question, I noticed at the bottom there came up "Similar Threads" that are almost identical to mine. I will learn to search before posting.

      Thanks, Kenneth

        Thanks Mike,

        Great suggestion, I'll try it.
Yes, the intake is on the block and in the chassis.

        Thanks, Kenneth

The 63 tube has a rolled bead or internal lip that can be captured with a small inside puller using a slide hammer. They come out easy and straight (which is a consideration when pulling one from an aluminum manifold).

            Thanks Stu,

I don't have a slide hammer. Are they expensive? I think I know what you're talking...you talk about a small inside puller. Is this a part that comes with a slide hammer or is this something that would have to be made to fit on the inside under the rolled lip?

I have a bad habit of buying tools that I need for a specific task, which sometimes turns out to be a one time need. As such, I've collected a lot of such tools over the past 50 to 60 years. My son now is the lucky recipient of my collection. He just comes around and asks what I have to do this or that and doesn't have to buy much of anything even though he can well afford it.

Ken, I have removed a few tubes, what I have done is just take a rubber mallet or a plastic dead blow hammer and hit it from side to side, the metal tube will start moving and generally you can take your hand and pull it out.

As long as it is a 300 hp cast iron manifold you probably can beat the dickens out of the old tube, but don't transfer that practice to an aluminum 340 hp manifold. FWIW, this is specially important on installing the new tubes which are repros and are a little bit bigger in diameter and will split an aluminum manifold if you drive it in to an equal position as the original.

Re: 1963 Oil filler tube removal

My helper and I go crazy trying to remove the fuel injection tubes without damaging them. Especially when there are NO 63 Fuel Injection REPROS out there are even close to being correct. The typical repro has the elbow way down on the tube. Totally incorrect. And the cap orientation is way off.

Now the question was how to remove the oil tube while on the block/intake manifold. I haven't removed one from a cast iron intake in an eon. So I cannot help you on hints.
But I/we have removed tons of them from the aluminum intakes/baseplates.

Here's a trick that goes against anything I have ever learned in my whole life.
We had a minty original 63 oil filler tube that would not come out. All the Aero Kroil and all the heating around the outside of the tube did nothing. Either did pounding on the bottom edge of the tube with various pieces of wood and even a huge brass tool

Now for the punch line. My helpers cousin came to the shop one night and saw us suffering on this oil filler tube.
He said step aside. The fellow heated the oil filler tube. On the bottom close to the edge. All at once this oil tube fell out without touching it and bounced on the rubber mat. I was shocked.
We have done this recently and it works like magic. Heat the bottom edge of the tube and a little bit on the side of the tube. I forgot to say the baseplate was mounted in a big old press. Sandwiched between two pieces of huge lumber. Upside down.

Another trick. When removing the heater hose fitting on the aluminum intakes don't use hear on the aluminum. Aim your big torch (not baby propane one) on the fitting itself. Then use the aero kroil. do this a couple of times. Then the fitting comes out very easy.
Exception to this procedure is those water pump bypass fittings with the screw driver slot. Those are tough and sinful. John

                      Stu,

Your suggestion worked! I went to Harbor Freight and got a "Slide Hammer and Bearing Puller Set".
It was on sale and I had a 20% off coupon also. When I got it home within 15 minutes the oil filler tube was out. Three pulls on the slide hammer and it was out!

                      Thanks again!

                          Bob,

The "Pittsburgh Automotive" 5 piece set. Item#62601
It has four different size pullers, called collets. I used the largest of the four. I stuck it in the oil filler tube. Screwed a screw in that causes the arms on the puller to open up against the inside rolled edge of the tube. It fit a little loose, but three pulls with the slide hammer and out came the tube.

                          Thanks, Kenneth
