65 convertible door weather strip question

Hi again C-2 doctors. With the exception of installing the last piece of the cooling puzzle, the clutch, I'm about ready to move on to the next small project; the upper horizontal weather strip ( rubber ). On my last parts order, I went ahead and ordered the rubber, new screws for the stainless piece and the rivets. My question is : how to go about installing the rivets. I've put in a zillion rivets in copper roof flashing because that is part of what I do for a living, but these rivets don't have the typical pin inside the rivet that is pulled tight with the rivet gun. How in the world do these things work ?

Are they solid rivets, or a two piece design (similar to a Hilok bolt with a nut/collar on the back side)? Picture?

      John,

The horizontal weatherstrip on what? Softop, Hardtop etc. Maybe a picture would help. Just can't picture in my mind what you are talking about.

      Thanks,

      JR

Are you working on the outer window sweeps, the rubber on the top of the door? If so, I just did them on my 67. I got my parts from ZIP and they provide a counter sunk head semi tubular rivet which looked like the originals I removed. If you have the semi tubular rivets you will need a tool to set them.

Most of of the vendors sell an inexpensive ($15 or less) tool. Just make sure it is for tubular rivets, likely 1/8". I have these and also have the aero-rivet tool which is quite a bit more expensive, but is good if you are doing a full frame off restoration. It is advertised in the Driveline.

If you are working on the belt moldings with the attached window wipes, in 65 they were stapled on. They started riveting them in 66. You just drill some small holes and install the staples.

Yes, I'm referring to the upper horizontal outer rubber window sweeps. I'll try to attach a pic of the rivets. According to Long Islands site, it shows rivets for the application.

OK. If they were stapled on from the factory, wouldn't the staple holes already be there ? I haven't taken the door panels off the car yet, I was waiting until I have all the necessary parts so I haven't actually seen what is there. I was depending on what was listed as replacement parts to aquire all the needed parts. Did I order the wrong parts ( rivets vs staples )

The staple holes are already in the molding. Just remove the old rubber seal and line up the new one on the molding and drill small holes for the staples. I just went through that with LI. Their catalog is incorrect. Trade the rivets for staples and you should be good to go.
