1966 Holley 4160 choke stuck open

    Hi all,

My divorce choke was missing so just got the new part installed. Problem is the butterfly is stuck open so I can't connect the choke rod and I don't want to force it. Any suggestions?

    Thanks,
    Mike

UPDATE: I got the butterfly to move freely. Hooked up the rod from coil to carb (tight fit) and the value stayed closed. Started car, ran rough and then died and wouldn't restart. Question: with the rod connected should you be able to manually open the butterfly? I could not. Maybe I just have the spring and or rod connected wrong or maybe the car was just flooded from messing around with it.

    Thanks for any help,
    Mike

      Mike,

Yes you should be able to move the butterfly manually. I'm not familiar with the 4160 but just checked the Holley site for a link to the exploded view that may help.

Thanks Richard. I looked at this same document but it didn't offer up much help. This seems like a pretty simple design but man it has me stumped. Problem is you can't find much of anything when searching online.

          Mike,

This is a Holley with a divorced choke (on a 1972, though). Does the photo help?

The divorced choke spring was made/wound both clockwise and counter-clockwise for various carbs and applications. Make sure you have the correct one. Generally the parts books from the Corvette Vendors describe the applications for each. Paragon, LICS, etc should have that info in the catalog or website...........as I cannot remember which is correct for your car.

For all Holley square bore carbs the choke coil pulls DOWN to open the choke valve.

For all Rochester Q-Jet carbs the choke coil pushes UP to open the choke valve.

Some reference photos I searched for that may help.

Which mechanism more closely matches yours.
