Strip powder coating or just paint over?

    water pump A.jpg

    Guys,

The person who started the resto on my 69 had a couple of engine components like the oil pain, intake manifold, and water pump powder coated while he was rebuilding it. I will need to repaint these since this color, although close, will not match the color of the rest of the engine. Do I need to strip the powder coating off or can I just paint over it?

Also, there are a number of parts on the water pump that were in place when it was powder coated and I'm not sure all of these were in place and painted on original assembly. Specifically, I'm referring to the large allen bolt in the top of the water pump, the heater hose nipple, and the fan mounting point. (See attached photos).

    Any guidance is appreciated.

You will get a bunch on this, but powder coating can be painted over. We have a custom painter that uses powder coating as a primer on motorcycles parts.
You would have to sand it and that would loose the original texture of the engine part. When I get my parts powder coated the ask if the parts were ever powder coated because it is not easy to remove. I use my torch with 35 PSI of air and it burns & blows it off without getting the metal to hot.
I had my frame powder coated and then removed my state ID that was welded on and was able to match paint it using flatning agent and it is undetectable.

You won't need to sand it. Just use a scuffing pad which won't remove original texture.

First of all, this is not a correct waterpump for ANY 1969 Corvette small block. This is likely a GM #3859326 casting. For 1969 Corvettes this was a SERVICE waterpump. The internal hex head plug on the top plugs the external bypass which was not used on 1969 Corvette small blocks. All 1969 Corvette small blocks used waterpump casting 3782608 which had no provisions for external bypass.

As far as other parts of this waterpump go, the shaft, hub, and heater hose nipple were not originally painted.

You can paint over the powder coating as long as you lightly scuff it as others have mentioned However, what you're going to end up with is a paint that appears way too thick and different from other engine parts which were not previously powder coated.

Final answer: I'd seek out a correct pump that was not previously powder-coated.
