factory attachment was via spot welding. the vin tag was obviously thinner than the metal of the z-bar. spot welding these two dissimilar metals and dissimilar thickness would have been a challenge for the line working assigned this job. how many 63 vin tags have you guys seen where the spot weld burnt thru a portion of the vin tag. and does anyone know what the procedure was when an line employee accidentally scared the tag, i.e., . were some repairs as simple as one or two non-rosette rivets? thanks guys, mike

Re: 63 vin tag attachment to Z-bar
All I know is that my 63 VIN tag is original and has the typical 'double tap' spot welds - as if the perpetrator wasn't sure the first ones took.
I see that a lot on these cars.... I don't know of any that have rivets from the factory...although there might be.- Top

Wasn't there a Chevrolet bulletin to the effect that if the spot welded VIN tag was loose / becoming loose, dealers should rivet it back in place.
Can't say I have ever seen / heard of this happening at the factory. Have seen many tags with multiple spot welds, but if you figure the installer got three shots per side at it (middle of the tag, then higher or lower, then lower or higher) chances are pretty good that they would have made at least one of these successful.
This is probably NOT what you were thinking..... [VIN not fully discolsed because the car is not mine], but it IS a 63 Convertible.Attached FilesLast edited by Edward M.; April 11, 2016, 08:24 PM.- Top

Re: 63 vin tag attachment to Z-bar
As I recall, the dealer was supposed to stamp in the delivery date on one of the tags. This would have been an opportune time for them to check the spot welds. On my 63, there are two date stamps because I couldn't get back on leave and pick up the car on the original planned delivery date so the dealer had to re-stamp the date. I got asked about that a number of times over the years when the car was judged or inspected.

Frank,
I certainly hope the judges cherished that bit of knowledge and changed the judging guide or noted it to the team leader so when it was encountered again they would know how to react. No joke, knowledge like that is what judging is all about. Listening to an original owner and taking notes!!!!!!!

Re: 63 vin tag attachment to Z-bar
I ordered my 63 through a small town Wisconsin dealer. They were selling like hot cakes then. He had an allotment of only two. I got one and his son got the other. Their service people were not too experienced on how to handle Vettes, specially an SHP. They had mine in the show room for a couple of weeks and farm boys from all over the county came to take a look at it. They protected it quite well and no one got to take it out for a drive, of that I'm fairly sure of. They stamped mine based on the planned delivery date, then again on the actual date. They were real anxious to comply with the Service Release, I guess.
