I have an old original set of big block Kustom headers and side pipes. GM part #s 3960709 and 3960710. I know these were offered over the counter at GM . How rare are these ? Were these originally ever offered in chrome because that's what these are ? I have some pics if anyone is interested.

Re: Kustom headers and side pipes
How rare? Well, I remember picking up the complete setup from my local dealer back in the early 1970's for a few hundred dollars (which was EXPENSIVE at the time), but I don't know how rare they are. And mine weren't chrome but flat black.
Thinking about this more, if they're NOS and never been installed, they're probably VERY rare! (although Joe Lucia probably has several sets - none for sale!!!)

I have no sets. I wouldn't touch headers with a 10 foot pole. I hate them and would NEVER, EVER install them on one of my cars. I feel just about the same about them as I feel about side pipes, three twos, and TJ-2 louver trim. I don't have any of those pieces, either (and I don't want any).In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Kustom headers and side pipes
I have had several sets of them over the years. They are getting fairly rare as they tend to rust out fairly quickly. I had one set of the chrome and while they looked good news, they tended to discolor rather quickly if you ran the car hard.
There was a set on my L/88 when I bought it. When we restored it we installed a NOS 2" exhaust
system. The car ran like we're has replaced the engine with a six cylinder.Dick Whittington- Top

Re: Kustom headers and side pipes
The 69 was a strange year for Corvette, putting small 2" pipes on everything. An L88 with full 2" exhaust was never intended to stay that way!- Top

Re: Kustom headers and side pipes
OK Kustom Headers were available outside of GM through mail order direct from OK and also speed shops ect. I don't believe they were ever available from GMP (Chevrolet Parts) in chrome, just black. There is only one number for each part of the system. If there was chrome available there would be a separate part number for black and for chrome. The chrome ones were probably sourced directly from OK or possibly someone had their black ones chromed.
