    63 water pump rebuild

I am looking for a reliable shop to rebuild my 63 340HP water pump (#326). Recommendations and shops to avoid appreciated.

Richard, I have a couple of water pump rebuilders in Denver, Co and have had very good results from their much lower price than a (Corvette) vendor. Check around in a larger city in your area and build a relationship with a local rebuilder. You will be pleasantly surprised. My water pump guy does clutches and pressure plates and brakes also. Best of luck. Paul

Bill Mock or Arthur Gould Rebuilders in New York. Both are excellent.

Bill Mock advertises in the NCRS Driveline. Google Arthur Gould for contact information.

Before you decide who and where, investigate for correct casting number. It's been discussed that the 326 was not even available in 64, so a 609 may be your best bet.

I don't think that the '326' waterpump was ever originally used on any 1963 Corvette.

By the way, what makes you think that the '326' pump on the car now is the original pump? Later 1963 340 and 360 HP might have used the GM #3839175 casting pump but I don't think that any used the 3859326.

Rich, The 326 pump may or may not be correct for 63 SHP engines, but in the JM its still a number that is accepted, for now. The recent 63/64 JM 6th edition had it chance to change but did not, something must be up. I myself would love to see this 609 pump on a original 63 car. They say the early cars had this 609 pump and later's had the 326

I doubt my pump is not original since I have owned the car since 1965.

Try ChevyCool Ron Burke 480 720 8000. He can trade if you need a different pump.

                    Re: 63 water pump rebuild

Richard, owned my 1964 car since 1967 and know original owner, local club member. My water pump was changed some where in the 20K mile range. Then I changed in 50K range, but saved till 2000 when told it was wrong.

Most of the car is original however certain items I would claim as original turned out not to be. Even if others claim a part is not original to your car DO NOT through it out, later you may find it really is original. We constantly find new and exciting things out about our cars.

As I mentioned the 326 pump according to latest information was not available till late in 1964, if at all. So try to find previous threads.
Your best choice would be to use the 609 pump that way you will always get judging points. Save the 326 just in case the latest and greatest information changes again.

Example; I was told and the JG confirmed that my fuel pump was not correct for my car. Well I took it off in 1968 and saved it so how can it be wrong? All the experts (credible trusted people) said it was wrong. About ten years later it was found that two versions of the pump were used, the one called for in the JG and another which I had saved. So things change. These cars are a perfect example of the more you know the more you don't know.

                      A few questions:

Does the paint on the pump exactly match the paint on the rest of the engine?

Does the pump have a date code?

Is the bypass fitting 1/2" NPT?

Is the pump hub a 4 hole or 8 hole?
