    C2 Alternator Question

I have a 66 Roadster with a January 28th, 66 build date. My alternator is correct with a production date of Jan. 18th, 66. My question is regarding the diodes: Generally how far ahead of the alternator production date are the positive and negative diodes dated? Are the positive and negative diodes generally dated differently or the same?

    Re: C2 Alternator Question

    Bob,

Somewhere in my garage I have an original 1966 alternator dated in January 1966 that I am saving for my Feb. 1966 Corvette. As I remember it has never been rebuild. I have not looked at for many years but it is in a marked box about 8"X8"X8". When I get a chance, hopefully this week, I will look for it but I am quite busy until the end of the month so don't hold your breath. I will be not so busy starting in April. Maybe someone else can help you much sooner.

Dave, That sounds good. Also; if it's easier to take a couple of pics with the phone that's great too.
      Thanks for your help.

        Bob,

The stampings on the diodes of my original 1966 Corvette (made Feb. 24, 1966) alternator (stamped "1100693"and date stamped "6B17") are long gone. This alternator was on the car when I bought it in 1979 so I believe that it is original, however, I guess that sometime between 1966 and 1979 the alternator might have been rebuilt. Enclosed is a photo of it.

Sometime in the past 30 years I bought a 1100693 alternator dated "6B11" at either a swap meet or a salvage yard. Note that the "DELCO-REMY" casting is much than my alternator dated "6B17". I assume that the alternators were made in different factories.

Bob, I archive post from Wayne M. and he has a alternator diode dated 1 day before the assy. date. As far as the pos. and neg. dates I would bet its pot luck as the builders were likely pulling parts from a box so a few days to weeks maybe acceptable.

              Dave------

These alternator cases were permanent mold aluminum castings. Some were cast at GM's Bedford, IN aluminum foundry. However, I don't know that all were cast there. In any event and whether or not multiple foundries were involved, there were undoubtedly a large number of molds used. I would not be a bit surprised if the Delco-Remy script varied somewhat from mold-to-mold.

                Dave,
Thanks for checking your alternator inventory for me. The top photo does have one diode (on right) that still has its' markings on it. I can't quite tell what is marked on it. This is the stamp I was referring to.
                Keep driving and rebuilding!

                  Ed,
That's helpful information. It's amazing how fast the assembly of the components were. My car had a build date of Jan. 28, 66 and my alternator has a build date of Jan. 18, 66. Pretty quick for 1966.

                    Re: C2 Alternator Question

Remember that the same factory was putting out around 24000 alternators per day for total GM production in the early 1970's. Parts didn't sit for long... The GM daily production requirement sticks with me because in the seatbelt ignition era (1974MY) I ran the area that tested and shipped all the GM Seatbelt interlock modules to all GM assembly plants. Fed Govm't turned the switch to make the rule, and when enough pressure was put on Congress by unhappy voters Congress decided it wasn't a great idea and changed the law back, then started agitating for Airbags...
