    68 exhaust tips

How many slots were in original exhaust tips (GM calls them 'SPOUTS' in the parts books) for 68? Two or four? Does this change for later C-3's? Thank yo.

Is this a trick question? Four, there are two on each tip. And I do not recall there being any positional relationship to the angled cut nor the weld seam. But the slots are 180 degrees apart.

Not intended to be a trick question. After thinking about you answer, I could have been more specific. I was referring to one exhaust tip, not a pair of tips.

Attached are pics of what purports to be original survivor tips (two slots) and what purports to be correct GM replacement (4 slots).

If I understand your answer correctly, you are saying the two slots per exhaust tip is original factory correct?

      Thank you,
      Cliff

The other question I have is in regards to the dimensions of 10-5/8 on the top side and 8-00 on the bottom side that is shown in the Judging Manual. All of the exhausts tips I have been able to find are about one-half inch short of this specification. Is the judging guide correct and is this dimension set in stone?

          Cliff------

The original tailpipes (this is the only term I have seen in GM P&A catalogs) had TWO slits.

By the way, this style tailpipe was used for only 2 model years----1968 and 1969. While similar, the 1968 and 1969 were different.

The tailpipes with 4 slits were NEVER originally used on a Corvette. These tailpipes, GM #496346, were originally used on some Oldsmobile and Pontiac models. They became SERVICE for 68-69 Corvette applications after the original parts were discontinued. They actually differ from the original Corvette tailpipes in ways other than the slit difference. It's not a pronounced difference, but there's a difference.
