Having trouble installing stock shifter and linkage in my 66 project. My other project cars i had the advantage of actually seeing the parts in place before disassembly. This big block car was disassmbled back in the mid 70's and basically put in boxes which has lead to many interesting issues. The oversize hurst shifter which came with car kit has been discarded and a used stock shifter with new linkage is to be installed. Any tips on the adjustments would be appreciated. Thanks!!

Re: 1966 c2 4 speed shifter linkage install
Early 1966 Corvettes with four speed "muncies" used the 1965 style mounting plate (The shifter rattled in this case). My '66 is number 2999 from Oct., 1965. Later, '66 Corvettes got a (same type) shifter that was mounted on a bracket attached to the cross-member that holds the rear of the transmission. If you don't have holes in the cross-member, you probably need the plate sold by Paragon as number 1828K. See the two types of mountings on page 24 of their current catalog. (There's a saddle tan '63 on the cover of the C2, v.38 catalog.)
The "late '66 to '67" bracket I mentioned above is Paragon number 1930. It was commonly sold by GM in the '70s under part number _________. Ask me if you need it, and I will look it up. BE SURE TO REBUILD YOUR USED SHIFTER BEFORE INSTALLATION. Note the condition of the bottom end of the chrome handle, looking for wear on the finger that inserts into the three levers. Again, I have some photos somewhere. Tell us what you need, and best of luck.https://MichiganNCRS.org

Re: 1966 c2 4 speed shifter linkage install
Thanks for the help there were no holes in my cross-member so I used the earlier version. I set the shifter up by feel with the body off and it seemed ok when the body went back on the 3rd and 4th shaft hit the tunnel side. Who knows what happened to that shaft I tried for hours bending and fitting before giving up and ordering a new and or correct set of linkage rods I only really needed the 3/4 gears shaft. Now that the body is back on the car it isn't possible to really set it up by feel. Thanks again- Top

That "locating Gauge " is your best friend in setting up the linkage . The black line is something I added to visually check that it is in as far as it can go.

Re: 1966 c2 4 speed shifter linkage install
I made one and welded it on to a screwdriver. Short of taking out the left exhaust pipe section how do you get that in to the 3 gates with the body on the car? I took the shifter out of the car and it was difficult enough to get the gauge through all 3 gates. Putting the shifter back in with it still in is impossible as the reverse level is locked in the way of the lower mounting bolt. I made up a right angle bent tool out of 3/16 bar stock clamped it to the frame cross member against the grooves in the back of the shifter and it got the gates close enough that it will function. But Im not really satisfied yet.- Top

Re: 1966 c2 4 speed shifter linkage install
Here's one way..... Make the gauge from appropriately sized sheet metal stock.... Pop rivet to 12'' of 1/16" x 7/16" aluminum which can be bent into the several angles required to slip the gauge into the slot. The pop rivet allows you to angle the gauge any way needed . I'm sure there are many other ways ,but, this worked for me. Otherwise, you better have really small hands! Oh, Lowes & Home Depot sell the aluminum stock.- Top
