    1971 Muffler Blackout Paint--Which Paint?

I have gone through the archives on this subject but there are many different solutions recommended.

    1. Barbecue black paint
    2. Krylon semi-black
    3. High temperature semi-gloss
    4. Dupli color high heat flat black

The question is--which is the best match. First do you need high temp. paint--some say yes some say no? Second--which color is correct? From the pictures I've seen of original cars it looks like flat black.

    High temp or not?
Semi-gloos, semi-flat, or flat black paint?

    Thanks

None of the above, is the correct answer.
The coating on mufflers was a thick asphalt based material. To call it paint is being very charitable. It is more like the material used to coat C2 frames.

The question is--which paint will look closest to the asphalt based material?

I used Eastwood's black rust encapsulator. It is thick and similar to the original finish. It also smells like heck when it gets hot the first time or two, but it looks pretty near the original stuff.

          Are we talking about:

          1) the same stuff that was sprayed in the wheel wells
          2) blackout overspray
          3) something else

or are these all one in the same?

I am getting my car judged next month and need to black out the mufflers. I would really appreciate any input. I do have Eastwoods Rust Encapsulator--both spray can & paint can. Which did you use Bob?

I did not use the spray. I used the quart can and used a sponge to smear it on the mufflers. I tried a paint brush, but it did not look right. When originally applied at the factory I believe they used a rag or sponge to put the black out on. The chassis was inverted to the runs in the mufflers run to the top sides of the mufflers. Hope that makes sense.

I have heard the same story about the '63-'64 exhaust system blackout. Except some claim they used a mop.

This is beginning to sound like the "mitting" story which was thoroughly debunked some years ago.

I believe that GM part number 1050104 black it was used. It was used under the hood, wheel wells, and engine compartment. It is a straight (lacquer ?) that you do not need to add thinner. Stir it up and you are good to go.

This is getting mixed up, didn't realize so many 'methods' were still being bantered around. Here's my take on the muffler painting: It was asphalt based paint, not wheel well blackout lacquer, it was sprayed from above the chassis as it sat upright with engine etc. in place, runs would be towards bottom therefor. Dupont used to still sell the asphalt frame paint years ago, don't think anymore unless Quanta has it still. It looked shiny when first sprayed on the frame etc.

I've heard many different versions, so please help me understand
If it was sprayed from above, how did the blackout get on the BOTTOM of the muffler???
                            Thanks,

The theory was that it was very thin paint, so it ran and slopped around the bottom areas, like the bottom of the mufflers. That is why I wonder about it being asphalt, which is usually pretty thick, gooey paint.
