    57 3 spd shifter rods

Does any one know what finish/coating was used on the shifter rods in 57? I've heard black phosphate and seen bare metal. Anyone shed some light on the subject as to what the judges will call right?

    Greg,

Blueprints do not spec any finish, which usually means steel finish.

Thanks Gary. That's very interesting that they specify heat treat and hardness but not a finish. But I tend to agree, if the blueprint doesn't specify, then they would leave as is. Unless there's a next higher assembly drawing that calls out the finish along with the clevis'. That would be unusual though.

        Greg,

Finish, if any for a piece part is always called out in the piece part drawing from what I've seen with GM drawings.

Finish for an assembly is called out in the assembly drawing such as the C1 front suspension assembly paint.

          Gary,
Thanks for all the info and help. Especially the drawings. Not sure where you scrounged something like those up, but is a big help. Kept me from going out and having the rods black cad plated.

From your experience, what have you seen done to the linkage to keep them from rusting? Just rubbing an oil on them? Anything that you have seen that works better than others?

            Greg,

Suggest you start a separate thread about what to use to keep the steel shift rods from rusting.

I'm sure new and better stuff has come along to use.
