During an engine rebuild on my 67 I decided to tackle the heater blower cover which dinged during NCRS judging for being painted black. After stripping the paint I was left with a light grey finish. I'm perplexed. I thought the natural finish would be black with strands of fiberglass showing. What have I done wrong. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Re: Heater blower cover
This one had black paint, which I removed. It has a charcoal/gray look to it also.

This one had no paint and also looks similar.

Kerry, What did you use to remove the black paint? Did you use sandpaper?- Top

Re: Heater blower cover
Richard, The blower cover was media blasted. What I was left with is a light primer grey finish. Some areas you can see the fiberglass strands but the overall finish is primer grey. There was a crack repair somewhere down the line which was horribly done. My thoughts are the same people probably sanded or chemically stripped the heater box only to discover they were left with the light grey color. So they painted it to mask the grey. Just a thought but I have come across some other questionable work so my suspicion may have credibility. The car was judged Top Flight 3 times with the highest score being 97.8. The painted heater box was one of the deductions. My thought is, I just paint it black again and take the deduction in the future or I might as well start looking for a different cover unless you have an idea. The cover probably came with the car as it is dated 67B which is perfect for the build date.- Top

Re: Heater blower cover
Donald, You are correct about the JG. After removing the paint I was left with a light primer grey color with some fiberglass strands visible. My response below to Richard gives more detail. I'm truly bummed.- Top

Re: Heater blower cover
Yes Kerry that's too bad. Media blasting removed it's original texture and color.
Keep your eyes open as you may find a nice original replacement some day.

Re: Heater blower cover
Kerry the heater covers come up regularly on eBay and Corvetteforum parts for sale. The 64-67 are the same any would work, but not a 63 cover. No date or number is visible when mounted as you know. Many midyear people put in the aftermarket AC and the sell the stock inner/outer boxes and various similar parts in the auctions. There may be someone on the TDB here who has a spare one not needed. My point is you should be able to find one without too much trouble! My local club has a meeting soon I'll ask there is anyone has one not being used. Good luck!- Top

Re: Heater blower cover
Thank goodness for great sources for parts. I work with "Richard Fortier" quite a bit and as luck may have it he has an original blower cover in a GM box that has never been opened. I bought it and trust me it was expensive but it ended a bad dream about my cover. Thank you very much for all of yours and everyone else's help with this matter.- Top

Re: Heater blower cover
I solved my heater blower cover dilemma. I was able to track down a NOS cover still in the original box. Although it doesn't matter, the date on the box is 12-11-75. It wasn't cheap but hey there isn't any part for these cars that is cheap.
