    '62 Restoration

We are restoring a '62 owned for many decades by a family here. The car is a 327/340 4 speed car with both tops. It has not been driven since 1977. White now we think it was originally black and that is what we are going back with. We have the body off the frame and have about completed the frame/drivetrain work. We plan to work the body next.

Hello Mike, I got your PM with the serial number. It looks like a white with black interior and I did read that you thought it was Black exteriuor from the factory. Could I get the engine ID number if it is original (Flint Stamping) , transmission type, and any other options (example) power windows, power top, radio delete, heater delete, PCV valve, Big Brake or Big Tank. Thanks Very much. Daniel Ross #12918

Daniel: You are likely correct about that paint. The paint on the fiberglass under the dash pad/cover showed to be white. We thought at one time this was a car from Copiah County. Mississippi that we were familiar with (and was black). It had all the same features (327/340, 4 speed, both tops.) However if that S# (or your documentation) tells you that it was originally white, then that is most likely the color and this is not the car we sort of hoped it was. The owner is now deceased. His wife is restoring the car as a tribute to him. The original engine is gone. This owner had found a correct numbered and cast engine years ago (2001) in Wisconsin and he had had those engine folks to stamp the pad with this number: 2109593F0322RE. That engine is in the car now and has correct numbered/cast heads, intake, exhaust, etc. but it is a NOM engine.

The car is pretty much basic stock than the 340hp engine and 4 speed transmission and the two tops (not power). The S# on the frame does match the serial number of the car.

These folks also had a 1961 Corvette. It was all to pieces but had a good body and a good frame and about 75% of the parts were with the car. We sold that car to a fellow on the Ms Gulf Coast and they are restoring it. The engine in that one was the same story as the engine in the '62.

How are you guys getting paint color from a serial number? Last I heard this was not possible on a C1. Did you check behind the drivers seat? Just curious

Terry, I think you meant behind the Passenger seat.

The car is all tarped up now. We plan to put it back on the frame this week and I'll look behind the seats for clues about the original color. Here are a couple of pictures back when we taking it apart. (Well, one of these shows the hatch open and it is black there).

Mike, Next time there take a blunt scraper behind the passenger seat. There you may find the color clue. It should be a green grease crayon mark. The HT is for Hard Top on this example. IVORY = White.

On my '59 it was in the trunk area, also IVORY.

We have no clue what a cars color are from the serial number. What Mike was saying that he initially thought the car was black because he thought he recognized the car as one he knew previously, but it was not that car. Sorry for any confusion on my part. Dan

                      Mike,

Just a little clarification on finding the color of the car behind the passenger seat! Yes, it's behind the seat alright but you must remove the cardboard separator (sometimes called a trunk liner) in the trunk before you can find the color written on the fiberglass in green grease pen. You may have to scrape some of the paint from the fiberglass.
On the inside behind the passenger seat on the inside of the car you may find HT if the car was so equipped with a Hardtop.

                          Joe,

On a 62 the color was written on the wall behind the passenger seat back and not the trunk. That is were I found mine. I think that the trunk wall was earlier C1s.
