interior window trim color for C2

Is the interior window trim on the 1966 C2 coupes a gloss, satin or flat color? My color is black

    Thanks

Donn, I have black as well. I used semi-gloss. The paint I used was Seymour lacquer coating #16-838, also on the label is HI-TECH. This should be the correct color and gloss.

Re: interior window trim color for C2

I'm restoring a 66 coupe with dark blue interior. I find the TIM & JG somewhat confusing on interior color/finish.

      Page 18:
      - the halo panel is painted interior color with a glossier finish
      - the trim moldings on both sides of the headliner painted full gloss (unpolished) interior trim color that matches the color of the seats

      Page 23:
      - Windshield trim consists of four pieces. The side and top trim is painted full gloss (unpolished), matching the color of the headliner.
      - the bottom piece is painted low gloss in the color of the dash.

I'm assuming that all the pieces get the same gloss level with the exception of the bottom of the windshield which is something very low gloss to match the dash.

The lower molding, center dash and speaker cover are all 3% gloss which would be flat. The purpose is to prevent glare.

            Tom,

I have a note from some unknown source that says "The higher gloss black lacquer for 1966-67 is Dupont Lucite 88. It is called 60 percent gloss." Would the interior black on the interior door around the window be 60% gloss? That trim looks higher gloss to me than 60%. When the '66 TIM&JG says "full gloss", wouldn't that be more like 90%?

              Gary,
I have a document from Chevrolet service news that shows only 3% and 60% gloss for interior colors. The 3% was used on windshield lower mldg, speaker grille, inst panel, seat and jack storage wells, glove box frame, linkage cover panel, big tank cover, directional signal housing, mast jacket, rear compartment interior area, steering wheel hub and steering column escutcheon. The 60% was used on lock pillar cap-inner, lock pillar return flange, door upper inner, w/s side and upper garnish mldgs, halo panel, hardtop garnish mldgs, and kick panel retainer. What is normally seen as 60% gloss usually looks pretty much like unbuffed lacquer. I would say it ap[pears to be more than 60% but it hard to tell. Unfortunately gloss percentages aren't consistent among manufacturers. What is 60% to one may be 80% to another. 90% might be a little high as the is usually a surface haze on garnish mldgs etc. but I would agree it at least appears more than I would call 60%.

This has been helpful---one more paint question: is the interior rear view mirror support bracket painted or polished? If painted, is it the 60% gloss.
                Thanks

                  Tom,

Thanks for the very detailed explanation. I've wondered about the different interior gloss levels for years and now it's all explained in simple terms.

                    Interesting subject -

                    Tom,

Is there a point of referenced for the 3% and 60% gloss levels? 3% and 60 of what?

I spoke to my painter about the interior trim gloss levels. My 66 has dark blue interior so we need to custom mix for the interior.

His comment was "it would be nice to have examples of the gloss levels like they have for house paint to go by. A chart with 0 to 100 showing the number to the gloss level would be nice. That would take all the guessing out of this. It would have to be consistent with the manufacturing world to work tho."

                    Thanks,

3% gloss is basically flat (no gloss) 60% would be semi-gloss. !00% would be full reflectivity. Most paint suppliers should be familiar with gloss levels, it's pretty much industry standard although there will be some variation. Paint manufacturers should be able to provide chips showing the various levels. I wold expect the mirror stem an a 66 to be chrome. 67 had a painted vinyl base cover which would be flat silver. I may get some disagreement on this but center consoles were originally 3% gloss although many appeared to have a higher gloss level, but they were certainly not 60%.

Attached are GM Service News for each of the C-2 models, showing what GM at least apparently intended to happen. This reflects what Tom has said. Notice that the 63 chart does not have the 3% and 60% references that the others have.

Very interesting. Are these scanned copies, and if so would you be willing to email them to me? I'm tried to enlarge the pictures you posted but when I enlarge them they are not readable.
