Joe, There are many ways, one of the easiest would be to have a spare plug wire and spark plug. Pull a plug wire from the distributor cap and plug the spare wire into it (top ignition shielding must be off). With the spark plug inserted into the end of the wire, ground the base of the plug (either with a wire attached to ground or holding against bare metal) and turn the engine over. Watch for spark in the end of the spark plug. Also they sell spark testers that clamp on the wire at auto supply stores. If you have any service manuals they probably outline a test.
