First off my 66 Corvette has interior code 418 (DK BLUE) I noticed my hardtop interior trim has a metallic flake in it, while the rest of my interior trim (dash, radio panels) was a solid color. Does anyone know the tale and if so a paint code for the metallic DK BLUE for the hardtop.

Re: 66 interior code 418 question
Brian, This may help.....
....but it may also make you more confused. None of the Interior Blues list a metallic notation. On Page 3(above link) there are 6 blues available for Interiors of Corvettes.
The NCRS 1953-1967 Spec Guide (pgs 187/188) show the 3 Blue Exterior colors as being Metallic. The Interior colors show Dark Bright Blue and Dark Blue, but no mention of metallic.
I think you'll need a 1966 "Blue" paint expert to help you with this one.

Re: 66 interior code 418 question
The radio side panels and dash are a different paint formula from the painted moldings. The painted dark blue moldings have a very fine metallic in them. The paint formulas for the interior colors have always been hit and miss, even back in the days when most body shops had lacquer mixing machines. Combine that with todays mixing toners that are different than those 50 years ago and the formula will not help much, most painters will custom mix the color from a sample part.
Hope the answers your question.

Re: 66 interior code 418 question
Stewart do you happen to have any codes for the DK Blue metallic paint either GM or any of the paint companies? I picked up PPG lacquer for the dash and such, maybe I can just pick up some silver metallic toner and add a small amount being careful not to lighten the color.- Top

Here is a scan of the interior color chart for 67. The original chart is with the archives at the AACA.1967 Interior B.jpg1967 Interior A.jpg- Top

Re: 66 interior code 418 question
I had all the lacquer formulas back in the 70's but tossed them out when we made the conversion to urethanes. Who woulda thought we would want them today? I would recommend to contact Tom Ames the National paint advisor as he has a library of many of the colors and matches them daily. He may the have the formula.
You could try adding some fine metallic and spraying out a test panel to see where you are at and adjusting the color from there if you have access to the lacquer toners.
Check the judging guide, the interior colors vary between gloss, semi gloss and low gloss so you will need a different mix for each gloss level.
On the color charts posted above there are notes on the bottom that are hard to read that discuss the addition of the flattening agent.- Top
