    JR,

How about '62-'64 red arm rests:

    GM discontinued.

Yes, these arm rests are applicable to 1962-64 Corvettes. However, they are not the parts originally used for those applications. They are SERVICE-only for those applications. The GM #4332259 was originally used for 1961-62 Chevrolet Belair, 1961 Chevrolet Parkwood as well as some Buick models. They later became SERVICE for 62-64 Corvette. They were discontinued from GM quite a few years ago.

So, how does the 4332259 differ from the original Corvette arm rests? I have no idea.

        Thanks Gary and Joe L.

Have a couple of those to go on a customers 63 Corvette. Just wondered how they had such a part number and still worked on a 63 Corvette.
They are exact copies of the original 63 Armrest.

The armrests originally used on 1963 Corvettes were Chevrolet part numbers. The GM #4332259 is a Fisher Body part number. It is POSSIBLE that these are just 2 different divisional part numbers for the exact same part. However, I sort of doubt it. I would expect some difference although it might be minor or, even, non-discernible.

Usually the grain on the vinyl pad is incorrect for 62-64 Corvette.

That would fit my theory on this perfectly. The bodies and interiors of all GM cars of the period except Corvette were manufactured by Fisher Body. The Corvette arm rests were thus manufactured to a Chevrolet specification with a Chevrolet part number. The nearly identical arm rests for Chevrolet and other GM passenger cars were manufactured to a Fisher Body specification, the only difference apparently being the grain of the covering. After the PRODUCTION requirement ended and the original SERVICE inventory of the armrests (i.e. manufactured with the PRODUCTION pieces) was exhausted, GMSPO decided it was not going to re-order the Corvette specification parts and the passenger car parts would be OK for Corvette SERVICE needs. Usually, interior parts are among the very first items to be GM-discontinued, often not long after a year model goes out-of-production. Absent the existence of the undoubtedly much better selling passenger car parts the Corvette arm rests would probably have been discontinued without supersession a LONG time ago.

So, why was there EVER manufactured armrests for Corvettes and passenger cars that differed only in the covering grain? Well, in PRODUCTION subtle differences might be important. Having a car's interior components "match" is something that a buyer might very well notice even if the difference is quite subtle. For interior SERVICE parts, the car has already been sold.
