I am trying to install the automatic shift lever in a 54 along with the carpet.
The carpet and gear shift was taken apart by someone else. From my research looks like the carpet was glued and screwed down before the gear shift was installed. I have the shift lever and what appears like 2 of the same backing plates (4 holes with fine threads + 2 small holes with no threads). One of the small holes has a broken rivet in it. Was this backing plate riveted on the inside of the trans tunnel? Was more than 1 backing plate used?
There are no holes in the tunnel except for a large one that the shift lever arm fits through, none for the screws.
Also in the shift lever there are notches for the the gear selection, do they face up or down when installed?
Thanks,
Greg
