    1966 427 ignition shielding

One more question about this shielding....I see that there are two grounding posts inside the shielding with no corresponding grounding wires in the set of spark plug wires.

Any thoughts on what wires, if at all, go on these posts????

    Thanks,

    Jerry

    Re: 1966 427 ignition shielding

Each of the braided spark plug wires has a strap/cover on the end that goes on that post and one lock washer and nut on top holds all four wires on each side.
There is a ground on the other end of the plug wire next to the plug boot where a clip pushes onto the "barrel tube"; therefore both ends of the shielded spark plug wire is grounded.

      George,
Thanks. I guess I had the ends reversed when I looked at the wires quickly. However, Can you define the barrel tube? I can take a look at the engine this weekend.

      Thanks,

      Jerry

The barrel tubes are the one the spark plugs fit inside. The barrel tubes bolt to the heads, therefore the heads will be tap to accept the bolt. Once that is in place the spark plug shielding sheath will clip to the barrel.

They are the metal tubes the spark plugs fit through into the 427 heads; they bolt to the head and form a heat-shield for the plug wires.

Okay. My 427 block does not have these tubes as there is nothing around the plug. It is just the normal opening into which we install the plugs. Can either of you provide me with a picture of the metal tubes? I don't mean to be a bother, but your help is appreciated.

            Thanks,

            Jerry

Are your heads taps for the bolts, if not your heads have been changed

Go to Corvette forum C1 and C2 section general discussion and look for the thread below. It should give you a good idea.

                  All 427 big block corvettes had the barrel shields, regular car heads do not; I don't have a picture; you could look it up in a thread or google chicagocorvette.net;
one of several suppliers that sell them; when on the website scroll down to "ignition shielding 396 & 427 components & complete sets" there are pictures showing the "shields" and "bolts" that hold them to the heads; the bolt set is listed as B5454 and cost $6.10 for the 8 piece set and go on down to B5491 to see picture of one barrel or B5460 to see a set of 8 for $78.45.
                  Good luck with it.
