    1958 VIN tag

I'm looking for a project to rebuild and came across a '58 that is mostly original that would make a great candidate. When I inspected the car it does not have the VIN tag attached to it and the owner cannot find it. He does have the registrations for the car back to 1960 and a clear title. My question is can a replacement VIN tag be installed on the car and still be judged? I have run across several other cars that do not have VIN tags and have stayed away from them, but wanted to get an opinion on this situation before continuing my search.

Thank you for any help that can be provided on this subject.

Brent, Not a good thing at all my friend. Especially today.
I personally would not spend big bucks on a car like that. Keep looking. John

If by 'replacement' tag you mean government/state issued vs. a black market reproduction, then no problem with judging. No deduction.

Be aware that many people discount the value of such cars, so adjust the price accordingly if you proceed with this car.

Thank you for the advice. It is a California car, and I think that they would issue a VIN tag for it, but it sounds like I need to keep looking. I don't want to put a lot into it and have a hard time selling it down the road.

The problem here is that there is nothing that links the car to the paperwork. In other words, how do you know that the paperwork the owner has applies to this, particular car?

There is a frame stamped VIN derivative on C1 Corvettes. However, it's very difficult to access and may require cutting a hole in the floorboard under the driver seat.
