    63 parking brake

Below is a pic of the linkage of the 63 parking brake. I'm wondering if any one knows offhand how much the point where the front cable attaches to the lever (blue arrow) moves fore and aft during application? I can normally measure it, but my 63s are 250 miles away, so any help would be greatly appreciated...

    Re: 63 parking brake

    Mike,

I have one on the bench presently and measuring the travel of the cable is 9 inches and the handle and rod can only travel 8.5 inches from fully extended to the switch.
Hope this helps as the cable attachment is adjusted to the lever by the "L" shaped link to the rear cables. It has to have some tension on the cable as it is a ball/bracket attachment. The tension is held by the spring and the adjustment.
I always adjust a 63 so there is no drag on the shoes but enough tension on the cable ball by the spring to keep it from jumping out.

Joe, I'm really looking for the amount of movement possible after there is some tension on the cable, i.e. when you start to pull on the brake shoe, how far do you have to pull on the rear cable before full engagement of the shoe is achieved?

My guess would be about and inch and a half. The movement of the 67 parking brake shoe that I'm pulling with the 63 cable is two inches, but its not a straight pull in my car, there are some difference in lever lengths in my made-up, hybrid 63 - 65- 67 linkage. I've got to work out the difference between the two, so I can establish the lever lengths in my Rube Goldberg set- up.

        Mike,

On a stock setup I would guess about 4 to 5 inches to full contact. No guess on the 67/63 handle setup.

Thanks Joe, I need a fairly close measurement, 'cause I'm drilling holes in the levers to change the moment arms. I'll have to wait until next week when I'm in the Detroit area, where I can measure the actual cable travel on my blue car, as I apply the brake...
