    Painting a 1108338 starter for a '69

    Hi all,

Does anyone have photos of an original, unrestored 1108338 starter for a '69? Or even a correctly-restored one?

I am getting ready to paint my rebuilt starter, and I am not sure which portions should be painted black and which should be left natural. Specifically, I am wondering if the cast nose and the round end cap on the other end should be painted.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

I have an NOS GM #1108338 starter that was manufactured in 1970. It was painted black as a unit and the only area not painted was that portion of the nose which normally resides inboard of the bellhousing. I'll try to post some pictures later if I can get to it.

Thanks, Joe -- that is very helpful! I assume the solenoid should not be painted, though, as stated in the judging manual, correct?

The original solenoid on my original owner 1969 with 1108338 starter was painted black. The solenoid on the NOS starter is also painted black. Of course, it's possible that some were zinc plated.

Attached are photos of an NOS GM #1108338 starter [not for sale] which was manufactured in 1970. This is a known NEW unit, not a rebuild. In fact, it is supposedly a unit that was shipped to PRODUCTION in St. Louis, then shipped to GMSPO as PRODUCTION-surplus. I don't know, for sure, if this is true, or not, but it does not really matter as I'm 100% sure it's a NEW unit. Note, for example, the lack of any mounting bolt boss "scarring" which all previously installed starters will evidence.

Thanks a bunch, Joe -- this is very helpful!

I'm curious... is the solenoid stamped with a part number? If so, what is it?

            Thanks again,
            Paul

1114362. However, the original solenoid on my 1969 starter was 1114356. Both were black, though.

By the way, here are a couple of 1114356 coils I found on eBay. Note that one is painted black and one is zinc plated. While both coils are in "pull-string" boxes, the black example is in a box that's an older style of Delco packaging, probably mid to late 60's. The zinc plated example is in a box I'd say was early 70's.

Thanks again, Joe -- this is very helpful information!

I now have a dilemma, though. Based on the evidence above, it seems like the NOS 1114356 solenoid I got for my '69 should be painted black. However, the judging manual says it should be zinc-plated (which it is at the moment). If I paint it, I am assuming I may lose judging points.

                  Anyone have any thoughts/advice?

                  Thanks,
                  Paul
