Removing oil pan on 69 427

    All,
I am contemplating pulling the oil pan off my 69 427 due to a nagging rear main seal leak. I think I can solve it with an aircraft type B1/2 PRC sealant at the rear seal. My question is: can the pan be removed without lifting the engine or removing the lower steering rod? Might just live with it if the car must be dismantled to get the pan out.
Thanks for your experiences with this job!

you can do it without raising the engine

but will for sure have to lower the drag link assembly - separate the drag link from the pitman arm and the idler arm (the assembly will fall far enough down to make room for the oil pan to slide out).

Brad, I just did my 65 with a ZZ454. It had a 6 qt. pan that I hit too many times so replaced it with a 4qt pan. Assuming the front cradles are similar from C2 to C3, it's no problem. You will however, definitely remove the center drag link & tie rods ends, then clear sailing.

Recently removed the pan from 68 L-36. Pretty easy, unbolted the idler arm from the frame on the passenger side and let the center link hang, plenty of room.

Ditto for my '70 LS5. R&R of the pan was an easier job than changing spark plugs. The shop manual has the step by step procedure.

Also, follow instructions exactly regarding the type and location of sealant for the RMS. The manual is specific about this for a reason. Do it correctly and you have a good chance of eliminating most or all leakage.

I used a small amount of anaerobic sealant on the specified mating surface areas on the rear main cap, and installed a one-piece Felpro oil pan gasket recommended by Joe L. (search the many posts on oil pans) without any sealant. No leaks so far (~6 months and 100 miles).
