62 Corvette - Black Painted Tail Pipes?

A friend stopped by with his '62 Corvette yesterday. It's an Almond Beige 62 FI Corvette and he bought it in '68 from the second owner. He's not a member of the NCRS as far as I know but he's kept it in very nice shape. He happened to mention he painted his tail pipes black because he was told that's the way they were from the factory. I don't have a 62 Judging Manual, can someone tell me if this legit or (no pun intended) a 'pipe dream'?

Exhaust systems on at least 58-62 were blacked out, including the tail pipe.
