63 _ distributor check with Sun tester

With the distributor spinning at constant RPM clockwise in a Sun tester, I set the degree ring at zero on one of the flashing arrows and immediately the arrow begins to creep counter-clockwise. ( Same result in opposite direction if the machine rotates counterclockwise) The creep is continuous and the rate of creep increases when RPM is increased. At 600 RPM the creep rate is about 40 degrees per minute. This is not associated with the mechanical advance because with the advance weights removed and the advance plate disabled with a rubber band, result is the same. The distributor operates fine in the car, so I think the issue is with the machine. Has any one had this experience?

I have not experienced this with either of the two Sun machines I have used. But I can tell you there are several parts inside that would be suspect due to age - capacitors, resistors, etc...... Might be time for an overhaul. Paramount distributors sells kits and parts for various machines. I have used his parts and advice a couple times.

Thanks; I just replaced capacitors and diodes. I sent Mark at Paramount a note, but thought I would see if anyone here knew the answer.

I think I just figured it out. I marked the distributor shaft relative to the chuck and determined that the shaft is turning in the chuck. Now I need to figure out why the chuck is not holding.

The chuck just needed an extra twist. All ok now.

That'll do it! Gotta love the simple fixes.
