    Pela Oil Extractor

Looking for advise/experience using "Pela Oil Extractor (6000)" with small block, standard 4-qt oil pan.

I recently purchased one in hopes of extending the life of the now-fragile female threads on my oil pan. First use attempt was disappointing as only able to extract ~3 qts & ended up removing drain plug anyway. Suspect that the suction tube may have hit an obstruction during insertion, then curled up, turned, or whatever. Lots of air bubbles along with the oil during the process.

    Thanks in advance.

You're best bet is to forget the "extractor" and repair the oil pan. It's not too difficult. The hardest part is removing the old drain plug flange which is spot welded to the pan. GM used to offer a replacement flange under GM #3723008 but it's discontinued. No matter. I think a reproduction is available or one can easily be made up from a piece of steel stock.

I second the motion about forgetting the "extractor". I bought one to use on a boat with a SBC with an inaccessible drain lug and never got acceptable results from it, even though I went over it and made sure all joints were tight etc. In my opinion, they just don't work right. Give to a friend with a boat where 75% is acceptable.

I'm not familiar with the Pela, but if it is a hand vacuum pump, they are worthless. I agree with Joe, but if you want an oil remover, you need to get the kind with a 12 volt electric pump mounted on a 3 gallon bucket. Jabsco and Shurflo are just a few of the better ones. We have been using these in the marine environment for years with way more than 75% (more like 95). 75% is not acceptable in the marine industry!

I have seen extractors using an adapter on the hose to go down to a small piece of copper tubing that ran down the dipstick hole and long enough to hit the bottom of the pan. It was more like the 95% if I recall correctly. Paul

Get the motor oil to full operating temperature and it will work better. Also a 1/4" tubing will get it to suck from the bottom of the pan.
