Hi Guys,
I have been asked over the years to document how an original virgin differential looks like as I get them. I am working on a 67 diff now and took some pictures for those interested. This is going into a 65 driver so it will be blasted, etched, POR15 and top coated for durability. You can see it is not painted, there is blue & yellow paint on it.
The axles are still good with only a couple of thou of wear. This is an important point since many rebuilders will automatically replace the axles with rebuild or imported new ones. The 63-72 original axles are pretty good and hardened. These had 030-040 endplay but it was not from the axles, it was the stock posi set up. When done they will have 005-008" endplay.
These should all be 1310 yokes with u-bolts, the exception are the 63 Grand Sports which had a 1310 yoke with caps and bolts- at least the one I rebuilt last year did.
The bearing caps on the 65-70 did not have the cast in tabs on them. I have seen plenty of rebuild diffs from that era with tab caps meaning they were swapped and typically not correct fit.
If you have any questions let me know.
See ya
Gary
