    1972 Rally Wheel Trim Rings

I would appreciate some pictures or description of what an original trim ring looks like.

    Thanks in advance!

I am no expert but i believe on originals ( not gm replacements) that there is always a retaining clip starting at the valve stem hole , ( replacements arent like that . Retaining clips are staggered and there isnt one by he valve stem

      from the judging guide:

Four clips held the trim ring to the wheel rim, not grippers around the full circumference. Original trim rings had one of the grippers at the valve- stem hole; later GM production has the gripper mounted around the circumference of the ring some distance from the valve stem hole.

The inner reinforcement ring holding the grippers was a dark, black ring without any lip. Later-issued rings have a galvanized reinforcement ring with a raised lip for added strength.

There was a thread from back in November where Alan posted excellent pictures of his originals from his 71. I don't know how to insert a link to that thread or I would.

A simple search pulled it up. Trim Rings was the search used.

        Kindest regards,

        Bill

          Anthony,
Here are Alan's pictures that Bill is talking about from his Nov. 20th post to the "C3 Correct Trim Ring Identification" you may want to go back to the thread to read his very detailed description.
          Hope this helps.

These pics are of originals as described by Reba. As she states, later originals had a lip on the reinforcement ring. I don't know just when the later ones started in production but I would guess approx 1976. This is only a rough guess.

              Russ------

Unfortunately, there's no way to tell by part number. The part number for these rings, GM #3923626, remained the same from 1968 through 1982 for PRODUCTION and SERVICE and remained the same for SERVICE right through to the discontinuation of the rings in the last few years.
