Acceptable idle for a 63 fuel car

What is the acceptable rpm ( what will "pass" ) for pv , for a 63 fuel car, when the motor is "warmed up "
what should it idle at when motor is at normal operating temp ?

According to the OPS/PV manual, cold, fast idle should be 1600-2000 rpm, and warm, normal idle should be 700-900 rpm.

With the way Cold Starts are being waived the only time it really matters is if you're attempting a PV....

I've noticed that. At the Denver National for flight ops, my '64 L76, same idle specs as a fuelie, was the only one that had a cold idle on spec. The judges said they were being flexible since it was "warm" that morning. Heck, it was 70 degrees, my car has the same cold idle when it is 30 as when it is 85, so long as the engine is cold and hasn't been started in a while. If your carb is set right, 70-80 degrees should be no problem at all.

Then be concerned, be very concerned, no slack at all given in that class for PV, ask me how I know…….

Paul, Rochester Products specs for a '63 Fi car: 1800 Fast idle. 800-900 for Idle speed. If you can get away with the 900 the engine will run better for PV. And don't force the car to quickly come down to idle. Let it warm up on it's own. Don't keep goosing the gas pedal. If you do the regular idle just might be radical or irregular for a bit as the Fi's like the warm up time. John

JD, one problem I found was my dash tach was off by a hundred plus RPM from my digital dwell/tach. When I set my idle to 900 on the external tach, the dash tach read 1000 or so. But the car runs great, etc. The dash tachs seem to register low.

Drove the 64 over 5000 miles to three Regionals and the San Jose National, one dust storm and 40 lbs of bugs!

That's highly likely the dash tach is not accurate, but for PV it is the standard that is used to pass or fail.

Also, make sure the tach needle doesn't bounce around at idle, the 64's are pretty rough at idle.
