    Engine Pad Question

In what year did the start stamping the vin# on engine pads??
Did they all get stamped Hi and Lo horsepower engines??

I'm looking at a 59' that has the correct build date and suffix code on it but no vin#, with the correct suffix code is this a warranty block in 59 or where 270hp engines not vin# stamped??

    Thanks in advance

    Re: Engine Pad Question

Mike, in general Corvette engines did not carry a VIN derivative until mid production 1960. From mid 960 on all carried a vin derivative. I have read that it became a federal mandate in 1968 that all engines carry a vin derivative. I also understand that other GM lines often carried a vin derivative on the high performance engines only from mid 60 until the mandate. The derivative is not always stamped on the engine pad on other vehicles, as it is in Corvette.

          Re: Engine Pad Question

I had an early 1960, November 59 build. It did not have a VIN stamp on the engine. From my research I believe the VIN on the pad stamping started in December 1959 when production started back after the Flint strike.
