NOS Chev oil pan I.D. for Joe Lucia or other parts expert

    Hey, Joe,

Am attempting to sell this NOS Chev oil pan on the CF site but do not want to mislead anyone as to its intended use. If you need more info, such as measurements, please let me know.

    Thanks in advance.

      Mike,

Anything more specific, like small or big block, and/or time period?

the pipe plug within the triangular piece welded to the side of the pan makes me believe its off a truck. odd that there is an offset for dipstick on drivers side and provision for a pass side mounted like a big block. mike

This oil pan is applicable to early 1956 Corvettes with pan mounted dipstick as well as several MD/HD truck applications of the period. As far as Corvettes goes, it's a SERVICE-only piece as this configuration was not used in PRODUCTION. In fact, I'm not sure the original early 1956 Corvette pan was ever available in SERVICE.

If this pan has a 2-1/4" front oil pan gasket radius, then it's most likely a GM #3794060 which was the early 1956 Corvette SERVICE oil pan from 1964 until 1978.

If the front oil pan gasket radius is 2-3/8", then it's the GM #360867 which replaced the above-referenced.

This is a later version 5 qt. truck pan. The give away is the large inside oil baffle. The early 56 Corvette/truck service pan (probably part #3735648) either had no inside baffle or a very short version, also side pipe plug triangle piece in 56 was 180 degree reversed etc.. A multitude of different versions of this pan (with different part #s) have been designed off the original 3 step 5 qt design #3725254 drawn 4-8-55.
Joe is correct, the production 56-57 pan was not available as a service replacement.

Just curious as to the purpose of the pipe plug in the side of the pan. Return from a remote mounted oil filter? Chip.

This is for the truck application only; it remains plugged when used for the Corvette application. I presume that it was used for oil cooler return but I'm really not that familiar with the truck application.

So, Joe, et al - Based on comments made here, if I were to have ordered and purchased a service replacement oil pan for a 1956 Corvette back in the '60s or possibly '70s, this or one very similar, is the pan I would have gotten? Passenger side oil cooler plug(?) and all?

Knowing now that the front oil pan gasket radius is 2-1/4", I believe the oil pan pictured is the GM #3794060. This is the SERVICE oil pan once cataloged for the 1956 Corvette application and also some MD/HD truck applications.

Below are some photos of an NOS GM #3794060. These are a bit grainy since they are scans of old hard copy but I think they show the similarity with the pan pictured above.

                    GM #3794060(a) 001.jpgGM #3794060(b) 001.jpgGM #3794060(c) 001.jpg
Previous part numbers for the 1956 Corvette oil pan were GM #3727732, 3736615, and 3789632. I believe all of these were very similar to the 3794060 and all had the pipe plug fitting. The 3794060 was in use from 1964 to 1978. At that time, it was replaced by the GM #360867. The latter pan is identical to the 3794060 except it has the 2-3/8" front oil pan gasket radius. It was discontinued without supersession more than 10 years ago.
