65 L76 Proper engine painting for judging questionsssssssss

As my 65 365HP 327 is going together , can an expert give me the run down on painting the engine? I'm confused on the judging guide. I understand lack of paint between pan and bell housing shield and between timing cover and water pump . But do I paint the engine with the exhaust manifold on and allow orange to go on the manifolds? I can't find a picture showing that. Also do I run silver paint over the bolts down the side of the intake? Also the bypass hose, I know it gets a little orange on it but is it at the fitting at the water pump ? If anyone has some good pictures of the correct painting, that would be a huge help. Also damper bolt.... Orange or black?? Thanks Tim

Jim the cylinder areas that are exposed should have silver paint and the overspray went onto the intake bolts, the by-pass hose should be orange and have some dull silver overspray on the area where the clamp meets the intake. You are correct that the bottom of oil pan where it meets the bell housing was missing orange paint, What I like to do is to spray some stain clear in the area's that there was no paint and then spray the orange next, the satin clear will help keep the rust away.

That's a good picture I have seen many times, it also shows the proper blackout on the exhaust system so many forget.

Thanks all. Does the crank bolt get painted or stay natural? Tim

I would hold off as long as possible on painting your engine because the new JG is coming out very soon. My engine is on a holding pattern right now waiting. I've got plenty of other issues to work on, you might not be so lucky.

Unless perhaps Tony Stein sees this thread and can give us L76 owners a preview of what the new guide says.

Tony are you around? He's pretty good at monitor threads on anything to do with '65s

              Tim,
I know nothing about mid-years, but some things are universal.
If the AIM (Assembly Instruction Manual) has a part number listed for the item (in this case your crankshaft balancer bolt) the item was installed at St. Louis and could not have been painted orange. This holds true for brackets and any other items attached to the engine.

However, the converse is not necessarily true -- that is, just because an item on the engine is not listed by part number in the AIM does not mean that it was painted orange. Some "dress" items were added to the engine at the engine plant after it was painted. These items will vary by the year of the engine, and may even change from the start of the model year production to the end of the model year production.

In most years the front of the harmonic balancer was masked to prevent a paint build-up that might cause the crankshaft pulley to not seat fully against the balancer. Check this with folks who know about the paint practices in 1965 though.

The new 1965 JG is ready for publication. It should be available for purchase very soon. Tony

Re: 65 L76 Proper engine painting for judging questionsssssssss

BTW, here's a practical tip for exhaust manifold painting. We know that the 1965 small block engines were painted with the exhaust manifolds in place. The problem with duplicating a factory style painting to the exhaust manifolds is that the heat from starting the engine will burn off most of the orange paint from your exhaust manifolds. Why is that a problem? Well, some of those hot orange embers of paint land in places that you don't want orange paint flecks to appear. When I dress an engine for judging, I just spray some orange paint in those limited areas that survive the heat from the engine run. That way, you present an engine with some limited orange on the exhaust manifolds and you've eliminated the risks of hot orange paint landing on your A-arms or your frame.

                  Hope that helps.
