    C3 wiper door linkage reinforcment

When installing my wiper door mechanism on my 72 I noticed that both the reinforcement plates that go on the firewall are intentionally staked on one end. Are these supposed to go toward the bottom or the top like pictured? Also, what was the purpose for marking these?

    Thanks

Interesting observation. However, there is no instruction in the AIM for staking these retainers. I checked the ones on my 1969. If they are staked, at all, it's barely discernible.

The sealant (or gasket, if you will) behind the reinforcement plate does not look like the material I am used to seeing in original applications. I suspect the marks you have observed are from attempts at forceful adjustment by someone not affiliated with the UAW or employed at St Louis Corvette Assembly. His name may have been Bubba.

Terry is correct there should not be foam there, my 72 has a sealant like the 3M strip chalk. I believe those plates may have some adjustment up and down for wiper grill ??

          Hi Scott,
My 71 has a 'stake' mark as shown in your picture on the left side reinforcement. It left St.Louis with the mark.
Here's a picture from a 69 BowTie car. 3 marks on the side makes me think the door and grill were being urged sideways a bit.
Note it appears the upper mark was done with more force.
          Sealer on this one?
          Regards,
          Alan
