64 vin tag attaching , methods

I HAVE A 1964 CORVETTE WITH THE VIN TAG RIVETED LIKE THE EARLY 1965 ,( ROUND STAINLESS STEEL POP RIVET). I KNOW THAT 63/64 WERE WELDED ON. WHAT I HAVE FOUND IS THERE WERE TIMES WHERE THE WELDED 63/64 TAGS WOULD COME LOOSE. REFERENCING #1; " NOLAND ADAMS ' THE COMPLETE CORVETTE RESTORATION & TECHNICAL GUIDE-VOL.2 , 1963 THRU 1967, PAGE 53. UNDER PARA. " SERIAL PLATE ATTACHING METHODS" WE HAVE SEEN EXAMPLES OF RIVETED 1963 SERIAL NUMBER PLATES " ---" TWO POSSIBLE EXPLANTIONS FOR LEGITIMATELY RIVETED 1963 AND 1964 SERIAL NUMBER PLATES EXIST. " ON OCCASION, SERIAL PLATES WERE POP-RIVETED IN PLACE WHEN WELDS FAIL TO HOLD"

ON PAGE 54 , PARA 3; BECAUSE OF WELDS FAILING THE ST. LOUIS PLANT REQUESTED A CHANGE TO POP RIVETS. THE CHANGE WAS MADE FOR 1965. TWO DIFFERENT RIVETS WERE USED ; EARLY 65 HAD A "ROUND HEAD" MADE OF STAINLESS STEEL, RESEMBLING THE COMMON POP RIVET AVAILABLE AT ANY HARDWARE STORE". " THE SECOND TYPE WAS ALSO STAINLESS STEEL, BUT ITS DESIGN WAS QUITE SPECIAL: ITS HEAD HAD SCALLOPED EDGES MAKING IT APPEAR STAR-SHAPED. THIS RIVET, KNOWN AS A " ROSETTE "

REF. 2," CORVETTE BY THE NUMBERS 1955-82, PAGE 2/3, PARA 2.3" IN LATE 1963 AND 1964 THE NEW DESIGN PLATE ENTERED PRODUCTION CONTAINING THE LETTERS " DD "( DELIVERY DATE )" " THERE SEEM TO BE A PROBLEM WITH MANY DEALERS HITTING THE PLATES TOO HARD AND BREAKING THE WELDS LOOSE "

ref. 3, NCRS " THE NATIONAL CORVETTE RESTORERS SOCIETY RESTORATION AND MAINTENANCE ENCYCLOPEDIA; 1963-67"
MISC. INTERIOR PAGE 15. " DEALER DELIVERY DATE STAMP BY JOHN AMGWERT " THIS TALKS ABOUT A CHEVROLET SERVICE NEWS THAT WAS PUT OUT ON HOW TO STAMP THE DELIVERY DATE SO PLATE WOULD BE LESS LIKELY TO COME LOOSE.

I WAS TOLD BY A MAN I MEET IN THE HEMMINGS MAG. THAT CHEVROLET HAD ALSO PUT OUT A BULLETIN OF SOME SORT THAT ADDRESS THIS PROBLEM WITH VIN TAGS COMING LOOSE AND TO REATTACHED THEM WITH THE APPROVED POP-RIVETS. I KNOW THIS IS HEAR SAY, SO WHAT I AM ASKING FOR ARE COMMENTS ON THIS, IS THERE A PROBLEM AND IF SO, WHY IS IT A PROBLEM? AND WHAT CAN I DO TO CORRECT IT.

Re: 64 vin tag attaching , methods

i'm currently restoring a late 63. its original vin tag was spot welded but the weld on the tags right edge is burnt thru the tag. the weld on the left side of the tag appears to have two seperate weld scars but the tag is held fast to the reinforcement bar on the tags left edge. . someone( not me) attempted to fix the faulty spot weld with a pair of round(not rosette) rivets. the vin stamped on this vets frame matches the vin tag as well as the title. i have seen similar vin tag anomalies on the NCRS judging fields . mike

      Richard,

I would contact the National Judging Chairman for guidance on this question. I suspect there are a few cases out there as well as a few examples of 60 - 62 with detached VIN plates that fell off the steering column. Spot welding these tags was really a dumb idea.

One acceptable solution as far as NCRS judging is concerned is to get a State issued VIN tag to accompany your riveted tag. There may be other options for you depending on how much documentation/proof you have to validate the tag is original to your car.

      Here is his contact info.

      good luck,

        Tracy,
Here in CA, I jumped thru hoops to get rid of my State issued tag. They took the original and added CA behind my title. I now have the removed State tag (after they inspected) and installed (with the correct rivets) a new repo tag with their blessing if you can believe that. I keep the records and old tag/ title with the CA on the tag and title. My new title had the CA removed. All that depended on the inspector, but he was OK with it in the interest of restoration.
