    Steve:

You just might find your "slot" problem has gone away. All to do about nothing. Save your j.b. weld for the bigger jobs.

      Status report

After aligning the dimple on the drive gear "correctly", I reinstalled the distributor and started the engine with the weights disabled. With the vacuum can pegged against the intake manifold, the timing light showed 9 degrees. As an experiment, I reset the distributor one tooth retarded and it back fired through the carburetor. Moved it back and ran with max 9 degrees. Reset one tooth advanced and it spit thru the carburetor but did not backfire. More lab work tomorrow.

I mentioned that the dimple lined up with the square hole, but after rechecking, that is not the case; it lines near the rotor tip, but on the round hole side.

          Steve,

First, if you changed the centrifugal advance bushing make sure it allows the pin slot relationship to be at the same at rest position as before, you only want to limit it on the other end of the slot.

If the camshaft has been changed sometime in the past, you may need to turn the lower gear 180* to get the vacuum advance control in the middle between manifold and coil.

Are you still using points and the stock breaker plate. Sometimes the electronic triggers can require the distributor to time in a different position because they fire different than the position everything is in with points.
