It can be messy if you still have an old acid/lead type battery. But it can be done. But if an Odyssey gel battery is inside it is a piece of cake.

I know of a number of folks that have re-used an original (acid/lead) case and put a gel battery inside. In fact, I believe the Restorer had an article about this many years ago.

Yes, I have heard of people hogging out old battery cases and putting new Optimas in them to get as many points as possible. I may have to try it myself someday, if I can ever find an old Delco Freedom II, that came originally in my '81. But so far, no luck.

Antique Auto Battery used to use the "batteries inside the case" as the OP describes. Now the batteries are AGMs (absorbent glass mat).
