    70-72 vacuum hose bundle tape

The reproduction hose kit I received supplied 7/8" wide electrical tape for wrapping the headlight bundles along the left inner fender. What's left of my originals would indicate that original was 1/2" wide. What have you found on your originals?

9/16" on my '70. It's been on there since I acquired the car in '90 and looks original, but I can't verify that.

Maybe the experts will chime in.

It's an early 71, built December 1970. The bundle is more circular than stacked FWIW.

I just eyeballed another early 71--it also has 1/2" tape (.518" according to my micrometer). Both of these cars still have the extra two hoses for the washers in the bundle, but cut off. Then I looked at a 1-owner 70 that has 3/4" tape. All three cars are unmolested.

          Mike

Mine is a Nov 70 build and has the two extra hoses for the washers. Have owned the car since 8 months old. The tape is 1/2" wide. I did not use a micrometer.

            Hi Mike,
The original tape on my mid-January 71 built car's vacuum hose bundle measures 1/2" wide.
I'm not able to use it anymore because it's gotten quite soft and slimy as though it's degrading from age or atmosphere?
            Regards,
            Alan

Mike my 72 had a cloth tape and I picked up some at my local Home Depot, they sell the 3m brand. And in 72 they started the neatly stacking the vacuum hoses on pass. and drivers side fenders and also used long metal retainers to help keep things neat. this also may have happened later 71's ??

Years ago I saw one of the first 500 1971s with the vacuum hoses neatly stacked. It must have been some kind of test because that "feature" did not become common until very much later in 1971 production. I am sure that car was original and the neatness of the engine compartment was quite striking, especially when we compared it to a March built 1971 that was at the same location.

                  Ed,
i was aware are the stack rather than the bundle, that's why I mentioned it. I wasn't aware of any cloth tape on 72's, nor did I know they added ties. What width is the tape on your 72?

Mike I would say that its about 1/2", Its like friction tape or that's what the factory used.
