    63 327 block ID

The pic below is of the pad of a 327 block cast in Jan, 63. I'm wondering if these are original stampings or something the re-builder did. If its original, what the heck did it come out of? Thanks

The "040" was added, most likely be a rebuilder. It probably refers to the overbore (i.e. 0.040").

If the "S" suffix is not followed by any other letter unseen in the photo, then the engine is a 327 cid, 250 HP originally installed in a 1962-64 passenger car with Powerglide.

Also, the "6 18 77" looks more like a date than an VIN derivative. Most likely, it's the date the rebuild was performed by the rebuilder.

Thanks Joe, the S is the last letter, so 250 passenger it is...

I thought the VIN derivative looked like a date, but the font looks about right. Not sure how that date ends up over the branch marks, though???

I think Joe is spot on with his answer. Good one Joe. John

It's possible that this engine did not originally have a VIN derivative stamped on the pad. Less likely, but possible, is that this was originally a complete SERVICE engine for the above-referenced applications and had no stamped VIN derivative.

              Re: 63 327 block ID

Joe, I'd probably go with the first option, i.e., no VIN derivative on a 250 passenger engine. The heads are low-horse type, so that matches. The date seems to be of similar size (and the font is similar) to the font of the "040" stamp, so maybe the rebuilder did stamp the date during a 1977 re-build.

Well, if anyone's looking to see original 1963 broach marks and stamp font, this is probably not a stamp that someone would have faked for any reason, so there you go...a good example...

Now, what do I do with it?

                Michael,

The cast date on the back will give a indication of the best fit for the year car.

Simply put, if it's a Flint block (which it is) and a 870 cast block (which it probably is) it can service perfectly the car made in the casting year of the block. The assembly date is February so the cast date may be A?? or even L?? of the previous year that best fits the car.
