    1997-99 Gas Cap Date Codes

We are attempting to clarify the date coding on the 1997-99 Corvette. We have come up with a number of variations on the gas cap. Therefore, I am asking if you have or know of someone who has a 1997-99 Corvette to look at the gas cap and let me know what the inscription is on the cap. We also need the applicable build date.I am attaching a photo of a 1999 Corvette gas cap with a build date of September 1998. This photo was furnished by Tom Hendricks. If you can send me a photo, that would be a great help as I can add it to the data base. Please send it along to fulassoc@comcast.net.

Re: 1997-99 Gas Cap Date Codes

    Pat,

According to my November 1998 GM Crash Estimating Guide the GM fuel cap part number for the 1997-1998 Corvette was 22600552. This part number is also listed for the 1997-1998 Chevrolet S10 trucks. I just sold my 1998 S10 (made in the Fall of 1997) a few months ago after serving me for 17 3/4 years but somewhere in my garage I still have the original fuel cap.

The fuel cap part number for the 1999 Corvette is 22600551.

Dave, thanks for the response. According to your information there is a different part number for the 1997-98 and 99. I wondering if any physical differences are present?Again, thanks for your help.

I show that the GM #22600552, aka Delco GT219, was used for 1997 and the GM #22600551, aka Delco GT218, was used for 1998-99. However, it's very possible that the 22600552 was used for at least early 1998. The difference between them MAY be that one had a tether and the other did not, but I'm not at all sure about that.

Both caps are GM-discontinued and replaced by other part numbers. Just how the current caps differ from the originals I do not know.

By the way, the current OEM replacement cap for 1997-99 is GM #19207873.

Re: 1997-99 Gas Cap Date Codes

Note that the 22600551 cap listed for $8.06 and the 22600552 cap listed for only $5.62 back in November 1998.
My original 1998 S10 (made in the Fall of 1997) fuel cap (assumed to be GM # 22600552) had a tether attached to it but broke sometime within the last 17 3/4 years.

Re: 1997-99 Gas Cap Date Codes

Folks, all is well in the 1997-99 Gas Cap Date Code Land. Through the participation of a number of individuals we have partially determined the meaning behind the Date Code Casting Number of the Gas Cap. The final piece of the puzzle was provided by Allen Tremain, the 1997-99 National Team Leader. A spread sheet was prepared from all the information furnished after an examination of numerous 1997-99 Gas Caps and that spread sheet was furnished to Allen for his review. We had previously determined that the first digit of the Gas Cap Code was for the year of manufacture of the Gas Cap. Allen after reviewing the spread sheet determined that the next two digits of the date code represented the week of manufacture of the Gas Cap.We still do not know the meaning of the Alpha code (fourth character) or the two numbers under the initial date code, but enough has been determined to be of assistance in the judging process.I am attaching a photo of the last Gas Cap that was obtained. You can see the code of 838P/11. The first digit of 8 represents the year of manufacture of the Gas Cap and the next two digits represent the week of manufacture, the 38th week. This Gas Cap was on a 1999 Corvette with an October 1998 Build Date. Thanks to every one that participated.
