    '67 L79 alternator fan

A recent thread discussed at length the different pulleys associated with SB C2. My question is regarding the separate fan used in conjunction with the pulley. Please look at the attached and let me know if these would be correct for my application. '67 L79, C60, N40. Thanks.

P.S. Couldn't find the fan at either Paragon or LIC which I thought a bit odd.

    Leif,
The pulley looks about the same (3" Dia) as my L79, but I don't have air. As for the fan the asymmetric shape is good. The large diameter pulley covers up most of the fan. But I could not say that is the exact shape is good or not. As far as I know the fan is common to regular Chevy. I'm not sure what the repro's reflect. Maybe somebody has a photo of an unassembled fan they will post.

Thank for your comments, Gene. Someone's photo or confirmation that the fan is correct would be nice...before I order both.

        Leif.
I suggest you should be able to find original GM pieces without having to resort to reproductions. I have bought entire alternators (not necessarily correct numbers/date) but complete with the pieces you are looking for on the cheap $15 or less. Just remove & refinish the originals.

The left one is off a junkyard puchase.

The black one is from an eBay "696" purchase (alternator dated May '65) -- you can see the outline of the large dia. pulley that Gene describes. Look at the circular hole in the crotch of each blade junction.

Both 11-blades of varying width (to avoid harmonics, I'm told).

            Hi Leif:

I believe that the fan used for the 1967 L79 with C60 was the 3846180, which is 3.0" in diameter. In other words, the Paragon pulley looks correct to me.

Regarding the fan, it was a separate, stamped steel unit that was at least similar to the Corvette America part you reference. I do not have the part number handy, but I can check tomorrow when I get home.

The main difference between high performance engines and ordinary ones was that the for the base engines and most passenger cars, the fan and pulley were integrated into a single assembly. For the L79 they used a separate fan and a deep-groove pulley.

Thanks for your responses. I agree that an original is always more desirable than a repo but I couldn't find a original part number to begin my search. Y'all have given me the information I need to proceed. Again, and as always, thank you very much.

                Leif------

The original part number for the alternator fan was GM #3843346. That fan was discontinued in June, 1971. I've been looking for an NOS, "in-the-box" with part number example of this fan for years and still have not found one.

I believe that each of those you pictured are the GM #3843346. I can't say, for sure, since I don't have an NOS example of that fan to compare.

I believe the minor difference seen in the examples you show are most likely the result of different manufacturers or different tooling used over time. It looks like there is a manufacturer's ID mark at about 10:00 on the example on the left. I can't see a mark on the one on the right.

                    Re: '67 L79 alternator fan

I have a NOS fan and it's exactly like the right hand picture in Wayne's post. It has no ID mark and those little drill stops at the bottom of each blade. I do not have a box, it was part of a power steering kit I bought a few years back for a 6 cylinder chevy, I may have that box and part # but it was ratty so it could have been thrown away.

This kit was in a old black/yellow box and contained a power steering pulley, this fan, a belt and a new double groove water pump pulley that was correct for the 250-300hp 63-65 Corvette engine, I think 659 is the last three of that pulley. The kit also contained some other parts unique to the application like a pressure hose etc. The man selling it told me he was tired of carting it around and I bought it for something like twelve dollars, after I spotted the water pump pulley.

I can look for the box/part # if it's of any interest to anyone but not 100% sure I still have it.

                      Tim,
I, obviously, would be interested in purchasing this part if available for sale. Thanks.
